Survival of the Creepiest – Halloween Creature Adaptation STEM Challenge

Description

On Halloween night, the Earth's climate fractures into eerie realms warped by monstrous weather. Only creatures born of imagination (and backed by science adaptation) can survive. Your mission: design a horrifying yet biologically believable organism that has adapted to, thrives in, one of these cursed environments. Every adaptation must make scientific sense, or your creature won’t survive the Guardians’ test!

In this activity, your class joins the Order of Monster Makers. They must design a scientifically believable creature for a haunted realm, then prove it can survive. Students justify traits with real biology (CER) and score their designs with a 1–5 Survival Index, pooling class data to graph which realms are truly the toughest.

What students do

  • Choose a Haunted Realm (Dune Sea, Acid Mire, Tempest Coast, Frozen Flats, Ashen Highlands)
  • Identify environmental pressures (temperature, water, pH/salt, oxygen, terrain, predators)
  • Design a creature with 6–8 adaptations (structure, physiology, behavior) tied to those pressures
  • Complete a CER explaining how each trait increases survival
  • Rate traits with the Survival Index (Heat/Cold, Water Efficiency, Food Flexibility, Defense, Camouflage)
  • Contribute to a class data table and create a bar graph of realm averages
  • Discuss which worlds are “easiest/hardest” to survive in—and why

What You Get

  • Teacher Guide: Quick setup & safety, realm cards, pacing/roles, success criteria, troubleshooting, full answer key with exemplar data, graph, and answers.
  • Student Handout: Driving question, realm selection, trait brainstorm, sketch page, Survival Index table (1–5), CER scaffold.
  • Data Tables: Group Survival Index chart (5 categories + total), class dataset by realm, space for averages/notes.
  • Graphing Page: Prompts for Average Survival Score by Realm, axis labels/scale cues, caption starter.
  • Analysis + Model Answers: Sample responses on realm difficulty, trait mechanisms, exemplar CER.
  • Rubric: Realm pressures, design & adaptations, science accuracy, CER, Survival Index & data/graph, visual communication, Halloween theme & creativity. Includes a rubric with 'Survival Index' and one without incase you want to skip that.

Materials (low prep)

Student pages, paper/colored pencils (or digital tools). No lab chemicals—just imagination grounded in biology.

Timing

  • One class period for design + CER (45–60 min)
  • Add a second period for Survival Index scoring (optional), class data, and graphing
  • Optional gallery walk for creature showcases

Why teachers love it

  • Seasonal hook with rigorous life science content
  • Clear structure that blends creative design with quantitative analysis
  • Flexible for mixed-grade classes and easy to differentiate
  • Print-and-go pages + a detailed rubric make grading fast and consistent

NGSS & Skills

  • SEPs: Developing & Using Models; Constructing Explanations; Engaging in Argument from Evidence; Analyzing & Interpreting Data; Using Mathematics & Computational Thinking
  • LS2/LS4 (ecosystems, adaptation), Structure & Function, Cause & Effect, Stability & Change

Tip: Kick off with a “Realm Reveal” slide and spooky soundscape, then crown awards like “Most Biologically Believable,” “Most Terrifyingly Tuned,” and “Best Survival Score.”*
