Science Posters- The Periodic Table-Brown Corduroy Design
$5.00 (1)
Turn your students into science detectives with this NO PREP, engaging, real-world investigation focused on planetary habitability and the search for life beyond Earth. In this case file activity, students analyze habitability evidence, examine liquid water clues, evaluate temperature and atmosphere conditions, investigate energy sources and radiation risks, rank possible causes, and build a scientific case to solve the mystery of what makes a planet able to support life.
Instead of passively learning about habitable planets, students actively investigate, analyze patterns, and reason through the evidence to uncover how water, temperature, atmosphere, and energy work together to create conditions that may support life. This activity makes a high-interest space science topic interactive, engaging, and easy to understand while strengthening critical thinking and literacy skills.
✅ NO PREP, no formatting, no issues. Simply download and go. Includes all instructions, answer key, rubric, and background reading students need to solve the case.
10-Part Activity Breakdown
Part 1 – Mission Briefing:
Students are introduced to a case involving distant planets and the question of what conditions make a planet more likely to support life.
Part 2 – Background Reading:
Students build foundational knowledge about liquid water, suitable temperatures, atmospheres, energy sources, and why scientists study multiple factors when judging planetary habitability.
Part 3 – Evidence Log:
Students examine 10 detailed evidence cards related to habitable zones, liquid water clues, atmosphere effects, no-atmosphere problems, pressure and water stability, energy sources, radiation risk, runaway heating, Earth comparisons, and repeated habitability patterns.
Part 4 – Suspect Ranking:
Students rank possible explanations (liquid water can exist on the planet, the planet has suitable temperatures for life, an atmosphere can help protect and regulate conditions, a steady energy source is needed to support life, and the incorrect idea that any rocky planet automatically supports life) and justify their reasoning using scientific evidence.
Part 5 – Pathway Tracking:
Students trace how planetary conditions → changing system conditions → possible life-support effect.
Part 6 – Impact Analysis:
Students analyze why water and temperature matter, how atmosphere and protection affect habitability, and how habitability studies guide the search for life beyond Earth.
Part 7 – The Big Question:
Students explain what makes a planet able to support life and how multiple conditions must work together.
Part 8 – CER Writing:
Students construct a scientific argument using Claim–Evidence–Reasoning.
Part 9 – Solutions & Action Plan:
Students propose ways to learn more about habitable planets, model one part of planetary habitability, and improve the scientific search for life-supporting worlds.
Part 10 – Reflection:
Students reflect on what surprised them most about planetary habitability and how scientists search for life beyond Earth.
