Description

This GROWING BUNDLE is composed of high-engagement, no-prep Space Exploration activities that grow with you. This bundle consists of mystery activities that examine space exploration challenges such as microgravity, rocket launches, space survival and more and guide your students through evidence analysis, pathway tracking, suspect ranking, and Claim–Evidence–Reasoning (CER) writing.

Students don’t just learn about space science concepts—they investigate real-world applications of them. Designed for 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th grade Earth and space science or physical science, these mysteries are scaffolded in a way that works for many different learning levels.

My Promise to You

I know every classroom is different. If you purchase a resource and feel it is not the right fit for your students, contact me and I’ll provide 2x the amount you paid in store credit toward another resource in my store, so you can find something that better supports your students.

What Students Do

  • Analyze real-world space science evidence and data including graphs, images, diagrams, and text.
  • Identify causes, pathways, and impacts of space phenomena and exploration challenges.
  • Track how patterns in motion, light, gravity, and environmental conditions lead to observable effects.
  • Rank possible explanations and justify scientific reasoning using evidence.
  • Write clear Claim–Evidence–Reasoning (CER) explanations.
  • Propose realistic solutions and reflect on how space science and exploration affect our understanding of the universe.

10-Part Activity Breakdown

Part 1 – Mission Briefing:
Students are introduced to the case involving a real-world space science problem such as astronaut survival, rocket launches, Moon phases, auroras, exoplanets, asteroid defense, or living on another world.

Part 2 – Background Reading:
Students build foundational knowledge about the space science concepts related to the case such as gravity, motion, light, planetary systems, lunar patterns, solar activity, life-support systems, or environmental conditions in space.

Part 3 – Evidence Log:
Students examine 10 detailed evidence cards. The cards include images, charts, text, and diagrams related to the investigation. Two versions are included: one set with images and one without.

Part 4 – Suspect Ranking:
Students rank possible scientific explanations for the problem (for example gravity, orbital motion, solar particles, atmospheric interactions, impact events, or survival systems) and justify their reasoning using scientific evidence.

Part 5 – Pathway Tracking:
Students trace how the space science process develops, such as motion in space → changing conditions → observable effects in the system.

Part 6 – Impact Analysis:
Students analyze how the space process affects the surrounding system, environment, or observable outcomes.

Part 7 – The Big Question:
Students explain the scientific cause of the mystery using patterns and evidence gathered throughout the investigation.

Part 8 – CER Writing:
Students construct a scientific argument using Claim–Evidence–Reasoning.

Part 9 – Solutions & Action Plan:
Students propose real-world solutions, survival strategies, engineering responses, or scientific explanations that connect the investigation to space exploration.

Part 10 – Reflection:
Students reflect on how space science concepts explain real phenomena in space and how scientific reasoning helped solve the mystery.

Mystery Resource Buyer Comments:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Extremely satisfied "Students loved the opened (but guided) direction and the thrill of "solving" it"

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Extremely satisfied "These "mysteries" were well written and complete...just print and go with very little set-up. It is student led and could be left for a substitute. I love that there is scaffolding for the CER process as well which allowed me to use in my study skills class. Definitely worth the money!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Extremely satisfied "My students love a good mystery and learning while completing is a win-win! This activity works great for a sub or as a review."
