The student version of the presentation contains multiple blanks that need to be filled in throughout the lesson. These blanks are conveniently underlined and bolded on the teacher copy. I have found this to be the most effective means of keeping my students engaged and active without having them write everything out. This also leaves more time for discussion and activities.

NGSS Covered:

MS-ESS1-1 - Develop and use a model of the Earth-sun-moon system to describe the cyclic patterns of lunar phases, eclipses of the sun and moon, and seasons.

MS-ESS1-2 - Develop and use a model to describe the role of gravity in the motions within galaxies and the solar system.

Specifically, the lesson covers causes of seasons and the role of Earth's tilt and rotation. Developing a model to explain seasons directly addresses MS-ESS1-1. Discussing how Earth orbits the sun relates to aspects of gravity in MS-ESS1-2 as well.

By learning about the cause of seasons through developing explanatory models, students have the opportunity to demonstrate understanding of key ideas outlined in these two NGSS middle school Earth and space science standards. The various lesson components provide supportive instruction toward meeting the performance expectations.
