Description

Earth-Sun-Moon Patterns - Fully editable and Complete 5E Lesson. This bundle is designed for science students studying Earth-Sun-Moon relationships and sky patterns, and the content can be adapted to fit different learning levels.

Lesson Objectives:

Throughout this 5E lesson, students will learn about:

  • How the Earth, Sun, and Moon follow patterns in the sky
  • Day and night as the result of Earth’s rotation
  • Earth’s revolution around the Sun
  • The seasons and Earth’s tilt
  • How sunlight angle and daylight length affect seasonal changes
  • The Moon’s orbit around Earth
  • Moon phases and patterns of moonlight
  • Solar and lunar eclipses
  • How the positions of Earth, the Sun, and the Moon create predictable patterns
  • How models can be used to explain Earth-Sun-Moon relationships

How does the 5E model facilitate learning?

  • It emphasizes inquiry, critical thinking, and the process of science.
  • Its success is backed by countless scientific studies that demonstrate its effectiveness.
  • It’s built around the idea that humans construct knowledge and meaning from their learning experiences. They build upon their prior knowledge and, to be effective, learning needs to be active and allow participants to construct new knowledge from their experiences.

What's included?

Engagement Phase – Video Worksheet

Your students will watch Crash Course Video Worksheet: Cycles in the Sky. This phase introduces the idea that many patterns in the sky are predictable and are caused by the motions of Earth, the Moon, and the Sun. Students answer video-based questions and use them to begin discussion about day and night, moon phases, seasons, and eclipses.

Exploration Phase – Device-Based Scavenger Hunt Activity

Your students will complete The Moon - Device-Based Scavenger Hunt Activity. This activity helps students explore important Moon vocabulary, apply what they learn to new examples, and build background knowledge before the Moon lesson and larger Earth-Sun-Moon pattern discussions. Students work individually or in small groups and connect Moon patterns to the larger Earth-Sun-Moon system.

Explanation Phase – Lessons

Complete The Seasons and Earth’s Tilt Lesson and The Moon Lesson. The Moon Lesson also includes Moon Student-Led Presentations and NASA Moon Survival Mission. In these lessons, students learn how Earth’s tilt causes the seasons and how the Moon’s motion creates observable patterns from Earth. The main focus of this phase is the relationship between Earth’s rotation, Earth’s revolution, Earth’s tilt, the Moon’s orbit, and the patterns people observe in the sky.

This is the instructional phase where concepts are presented in a clear and applicable way

  • Students develop an understanding of the content
  • Students develop vocabulary
  • Students are able to connect the content presented to previous experiences
  • Students explain how Earth-Sun-Moon motions create predictable patterns

Elaborate Phase – Reading and Graphing Activities

Your students will complete one of the following Solar and Lunar Eclipses readings. Both readings cover the same topic but are written at different reading levels, so you can choose the version that best fits your class:

  • Solar and Lunar Eclipses Reading Comprehension & Questions | 6th, 7th, 8th Grade
  • Solar and Lunar Eclipses Reading Passage & Questions | 8th, 9th, 10th Grade

Your students can also complete the Four Seasons Data Graphing Lab Bundle as a second elaborate activity. Teachers can assign one, two, or all three graphing activities depending on time, student level, and how much graphing and data-analysis practice students need. These activities allow students to extend their understanding of Earth-Sun-Moon patterns by exploring eclipses, seasonal changes, sunlight angle, daylight length, temperature patterns, and real-world seasonal data.

Evaluate Phase – Earth’s Seasons Lab Station Activity

In groups of 2–3, have your students complete Earth’s Seasons Lab Station Activity. Once they are done, they will submit their passport to you. This phase gives students the chance to demonstrate their understanding of how Earth’s tilt, revolution, sunlight angle, and daylight length work together to create seasonal patterns. It also helps you evaluate whether students can explain patterns using evidence and models rather than only naming vocabulary terms.
