Science Posters- The Periodic Table-Brown Corduroy Design
$5.00 (1)
Turn your students into science detectives with this NO PREP, engaging, real-world investigation focused on solar flares and space weather. In this case file activity, students analyze solar activity evidence, examine radiation and charged particles, evaluate auroras and geomagnetic storms, investigate effects on spacecraft and Earth systems, rank possible causes, and build a scientific case to solve the mystery of how activity on the Sun can affect Earth and spacecraft.
Instead of passively learning about solar flares, students actively investigate, analyze patterns, and reason through the evidence to uncover how strong solar activity can change conditions in space, affect Earth’s magnetic environment, and create challenges for satellites, astronauts, and technology. This activity makes a high-interest space science topic interactive, engaging, and easy to understand while strengthening critical thinking and literacy skills.
✅ NO PREP, no formatting, no issues. Simply download and go. Includes all instructions, answer key, rubric, and background reading students need to solve the case. This mystery is included inside my Space and Space Exploration Mystery Activity Bundle.
10-Part Activity Breakdown
Part 1 – Mission Briefing:
Students are introduced to a case involving sudden solar activity and the question of how events on the Sun can affect Earth and spacecraft.
Part 2 – Background Reading:
Students build foundational knowledge about solar flares, radiation, charged particles, Earth’s magnetic field, auroras, and the risks solar activity can create for technology and astronauts.
Part 3 – Evidence Log:
Students examine 10 detailed evidence cards related to sudden solar energy release, charged particle bursts, radio blackout risk, satellite safe mode, auroras farther from the poles, power grid disturbances, astronaut radiation risk, Earth’s protection systems, spacecraft outside Earth’s strongest protection, and repeated solar activity patterns.
Part 4 – Suspect Ranking:
Students rank possible explanations (solar flares and related solar activity release energy, radiation, and charged particles, Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere interact with incoming solar material, solar activity can disrupt satellites, communication, and power systems, strong solar activity can create auroras and geomagnetic storms, and the incorrect idea that activity on the Sun stays near the Sun and cannot affect Earth) and justify their reasoning using scientific evidence.
Part 5 – Pathway Tracking:
Students trace how solar activity → changing space conditions → observed effect.
Part 6 – Impact Analysis:
Students analyze how solar flares and related solar activity change conditions near Earth, how Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere affect those changes, and why strong solar activity can be a problem for spacecraft, astronauts, and technology.
Part 7 – The Big Question:
Students explain how activity on the Sun can affect Earth and spacecraft and how solar activity, Earth’s protective systems, and technology are connected.
Part 8 – CER Writing:
Students construct a scientific argument using Claim–Evidence–Reasoning.
Part 9 – Solutions & Action Plan:
Students propose ways to learn more about solar flares and space weather, model one part of solar activity in class, and improve protection for Earth and spacecraft during strong solar storms.
Part 10 – Reflection:
Students reflect on what surprised them most about solar activity and how events on the Sun can influence both Earth and space missions.
What Students Will Learn
This activity blends Earth science, space science, physical science, critical thinking, and literacy skills into one high-interest, structured lesson that keeps students thinking like real-world scientific investigators.
