Science Posters- The Periodic Table-Brown Corduroy Design
$5.00 (1)
Turn your students into science detectives with this NO PREP, engaging, real-world investigation focused on spacecraft reentry and thermal protection systems. In this case file activity, students analyze reentry evidence, examine compressed air heating, evaluate heat shield materials, investigate spacecraft shape and reentry angle, rank possible causes, and build a scientific case to solve the mystery of why spacecraft don’t burn up completely during reentry.
Instead of passively learning about reentry and heat shields, students actively investigate, analyze patterns, and reason through the evidence to uncover how heat shields, spacecraft design, and controlled reentry protect vehicles returning to Earth. This activity makes a high-interest space science and engineering topic interactive, engaging, and easy to understand while strengthening critical thinking and literacy skills.
✅ NO PREP, no formatting, no issues. Simply download and go. Includes all instructions, answer key, rubric, and background reading students need to solve the case.
10-Part Activity Breakdown
Part 1 – Mission Briefing:
Students are introduced to a case involving spacecraft returning to Earth and the question of why they do not burn up completely during reentry.
Part 2 – Background Reading:
Students build foundational knowledge about reentry heating, compressed air, heat shields, spacecraft shape, and why reentry angle matters.
Part 3 – Evidence Log:
Students examine 10 detailed evidence cards related to high-speed reentry, compressed air heating, blunt capsule shape, ablative heat shields, cooler spacecraft interiors, steep and shallow reentry paths, damaged tile risks, debris burnup, glowing plasma, and repeated successful reentry patterns.
Part 4 – Suspect Ranking:
Students rank possible explanations (air in front of a fast-moving spacecraft is compressed and becomes extremely hot, heat shield materials resist heat and carry heat away from the spacecraft, a blunt spacecraft shape helps protect the vehicle during reentry, reentry angle must be carefully controlled, and the incorrect idea that there is no real heating during reentry) and justify their reasoning using scientific evidence.
Part 5 – Pathway Tracking:
Students trace how high-speed return → changing atmospheric conditions → protective response → safer outcome.
Part 6 – Impact Analysis:
Students analyze how reentry creates dangerous heating, how heat shields protect spacecraft, and why shape, materials, and reentry angle all matter for mission safety.
Part 7 – The Big Question:
Students explain why spacecraft don’t burn up completely during reentry and how thermal protection systems make safe return possible.
Part 8 – CER Writing:
Students construct a scientific argument using Claim–Evidence–Reasoning.
Part 9 – Solutions & Action Plan:
Students propose ways to learn more about reentry, model thermal protection in class, and improve future heat shield systems.
Part 10 – Reflection:
Students reflect on what surprised them about reentry heating and how engineering makes spacecraft return possible.
