Description

The Erie Canal Primary Source Investigation - New York State SS Framework 4.6b This Erie Canal social studies unit is an inquiry-based resource aligned to the New York State Social Studies Framework standard 4.6b. Students analyze New York State geography to determine the most logical location for a canal, compare their hypotheses to the actual Erie Canal route, and examine how the canal transformed transportation, trade, population growth, and urban development. Through maps, primary sources, and data analysis, students explore towns and cities along the canal, identify major goods shipped, and evaluate how the Erie Canal connected the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean, making New York City the nation’s busiest port.

I have included two copies of the first comprehension question page, one with the book title and one without.

Part of one lesson does require access to the internet to share maps from the New York Public Library- the detail level was such that including the images was not practical.

Teacher reviews

“This is a substantive resource that is a great companion for any lesson about the Great Lakes. Not only is there information about the history of the Erie Canal, but also about how the locks in the canal work. It is a cross-curricular resource that combines history and engineering concepts. Overall, a great find!”
