J’ai Mal! is a beginning French short story that gives novice learners meaningful reading and listening practice through comprehensible input. This ready-to-use lesson includes a printable story, two animated video versions, comprehension activities, story-retell practice, and an answer key. Repeated target structures and visual support help students understand and use French expressions related to getting hurt and saying something hurts.
Dad is watching the children while Mom is at work—but they keep getting hurt. Will everyone make it through the day safely, or will disaster strike?
TARGET STRUCTURES
Students encounter four useful structures repeatedly throughout the story:
• J’ai mal.
• Je me suis cassé…
• Tu devrais…
• Tu faisais…
READ, WATCH, DISCUSS, AND RETELL
Present the story in several different ways:
• Read the printable PDF version
• Watch the animated video with French text
• Pause to discuss, circle target structures, or storyask
• Watch the illustration-only version and have students retell the story
• Complete the comprehension activities
• Create a parallel story with new details
The video with text is just over five minutes long and includes pause time for students to read. A second version uses the illustrations without text, making it useful for oral retelling, sequencing, summarizing, and comprehension checks.
DIFFERENTIATE BY PROFICIENCY
With novice-low and novice-mid learners, present the story as written and use the repeated structures and visual support to build comprehension.
With novice-high learners, add details, create a parallel story, or ask students to complete a more independent retelling.
At higher levels, students can expand the story, analyze the language, or retell the events using past narration.

“Great resource! Thanks for putting this together!”
“I love this story because it is silly and helps my students and I stay in the target language! The storyboard activity was great summarizing practice for my 8th graders. This is a skill they have trouble with, so I appreciated this engaging activity.”

For Claude Monet French Reading Comprehension Activities Impressionism
My students were familiar with Claude Monet's work but didn't know much about his life, so this was useful info not in our textbook. I appreciated having the differentiated versions.

Great way to use history to review reflexive verbs while not just focusing on daily routine - which let's be honest, is boring. Who talks about their daily routine on a regular basis? No one.

I left this as a packet for level 2 students in addition to other work when I was out for a few days due to surgery. I offered a few bonus points if they selected 2-3 readings to keep them busy when everything else was turned in. They loved learning about animals and many students who didn't have time while I was out chose to complete the entire packet on their own time for fun once I was back.

Thank you for letting me know about the missing link - I've updated the image and it should be working now. You may have to F5/refresh to get the link to show properly (it covers the body of the statue).
