Description

Turn Halloween into a Gothic survival game where every choice changes what students know - and how much the house has gotten inside their heads.

Would You Survive Gothic Literature? is a one-class-period Halloween ELA activity for grades 9-12. Students work in teams as one fictional heir trapped inside Blackthorn Hall. Across five atmospheric rooms, they make hidden choices, reveal the consequences, and track two running totals: Dread and Clues. At dawn, they must decide whether to claim the estate, walk away, or try to end the inheritance cycle for good.

The activity is intentionally more experience-driven than skills-heavy. Students still practice inference, interpretation, evidence-based decision-making, and discussion, but the literary work stays underneath the game. It works especially well for Halloween, Gothic literature units, AP Literature seasonal enrichment, or any class period when you want something atmospheric and genuinely fun without assigning another heavy worksheet. No outside text is required.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

• 20-slide atmospheric teacher presentation (PowerPoint + PDF)

• 4-page student printable set (editable PowerPoint + PDF)

• 3-page teacher guide (editable Word + PDF)

• Gothic Survival Log for tracking choices, Dread, and Clues

• Final Choice / ending page

• Light Gothic Autopsy debrief

• Optional Design Room #6 creative extension

• Complete consequence guide and all six possible endings

• Setup, pacing, facilitation notes, and ending logic for the teacher

HOW IT WORKS

1. Each team plays one fictional heir who must survive Blackthorn Hall until dawn.

2. Students move through five rooms: the Portrait Gallery, Library, West Wing, Abandoned Nursery, and Family Crypt.

3. At each stop, teams confer quietly and lock in one choice.

4. The consequence is revealed, changing the team's running Dread and Clue totals.

5. Clues represent how well the heir understands Blackthorn's inheritance; Dread tracks how strongly the house has affected them.

6. At dawn, teams make one final decision and discover which of six endings they earned.

LOW-PREP OPTION

Project the teacher deck and print only the Gothic Survival Log and Final Choice page for each team. The Gothic Autopsy and Design Room #6 can be used as a debrief, extension, or fast-finisher option.

GREAT FOR

• Halloween / spooky-season ELA

• Grades 9-12

• AP Literature seasonal enrichment or Halloween activity

• Gothic literature units

• Collaborative discussion and decision-making

• Inference and evidence-based reasoning without a heavy academic footprint

• A one-day seasonal activity that does not require a specific text

TIME

Approximately one 40-minute class period (designed around about 35 minutes of usable instructional time).

ANSWER KEY / TEACHER SUPPORT

Teacher guidance is included. The teacher guide contains every choice consequence, Dread/Clue change, all six endings, pacing guidance, and an explanation of the ending logic. Student debrief responses are intentionally open-ended.
