Description

Engaging "Choose Two" resource to review literary terms and figurative language at the middle and high school level — with print AND digital versions included!

Do you want to review English Language Arts concepts in a creative, engaging way? Do you want to infuse fun and novelty into the classroom while working on test prep? Do you need a simple sub plan? Have you been dreaming of the day when student work would magically grade itself? This "Choose Two" Literary Devices activity was made for YOU!

In the digital version, students will read 6 question sets, each containing the definitions for 3 literary terms — for a grand total of 18 possible questions (who said ELA teachers couldn't do math?!). If they answer two out of the three questions in a set correctly, they will see a "skip card" appear, allowing them to bypass the third question! This format builds in student-choice and reduces overwhelm, providing students with agency over their learning. Our Literary Devices "Choose Two" resource is gamification at its finest.

In the print version, students will follow the same instructions...but with a twist from you, the teacher! You may choose to either check students' work as they go, approving of their "skip" for each question set, or you may collect the finished activities and let students know later if they'll need to go back and try again before earning that official "skip." The flexibility of our "Choose Two" activity ensures it will fit the unique flow of your classroom.

This creative and low-prep resource includes...

  • Teacher instructions
  • Word bank
  • Digital Google Sheets activity
  • Ready-to-print paper version
  • Answer key
  • ...and tons of fun for your students!

This lesson serves as a fantastic test prep activity, and it can also be used as an easy sub plan! Whether you choose to use it for a pre-test, practice opportunity, or review game, this activity is a great addition to your English Language Arts class.
