Description

Some students continue to stand too close, touch others, or move into personal space even after repeated reminders. What looks like ignoring directions is often a lack of understanding—many students do not yet recognize social cues or understand how their actions affect others.

This Personal Space Social Support Story was designed to explicitly teach students how to recognize and respect personal space using clear visuals and step-by-step guidance. Instead of simply telling students to “give space,” this resource helps them understand what personal space looks like, how others feel when it is not respected, and what they can do differently.

What Students Learn

Students are guided step-by-step to:

  • Recognize when they are too close to others
  • Understand how their actions affect others
  • Read facial expressions and body language
  • Notice visual cues in social situations
  • Adjust their behavior to maintain appropriate space
  • Respond appropriately in different settings

This process supports learning self regulation and builds self management skills, helping students become more aware of their behavior and make thoughtful adjustments.

What Makes This Different

Many resources tell students to “stay in your space,” but do not explain how to recognize when space is needed.

This resource goes further by helping students:

  • interpret body language visuals and social cues
  • understand how proximity affects others
  • see examples of expected and unexpected behavior
  • learn what to do instead in real situations

This makes it especially effective for students who struggle with visual cues social skills and need explicit instruction.

Builds Awareness Through Visual Supports

This resource supports:

  • social emotional visuals for clearer understanding
  • body language activities and discussion
  • recognizing social cues in everyday interactions
  • developing awareness of others’ feelings and reactions

Students learn not just what to do, but how to read the situation and adjust their behavior.

Formats Included
