Description

Chemical Bonding, Compounds, and Intermolecular Forces - Fully editable and Complete 5E Lesson. This bundle is designed for chemistry and physical science students studying chemical bonding, compound formation, molecular polarity, and intermolecular forces, and the content can be adapted to fit different learning levels.

Lesson Objectives:

Throughout this 5E lesson, students will learn about:

  • Chemical bonding and why atoms form bonds
  • Valence electrons and the octet rule
  • Ionic bonds and the formation of ions
  • Covalent, polar covalent, and nonpolar covalent bonds
  • Metallic bonds
  • Molecular and ionic compounds
  • Chemical formulas and compound naming
  • Lewis structures and bonding models
  • Molecular polarity
  • Intermolecular forces, including London dispersion forces, dipole-dipole forces, and hydrogen bonds
  • How bonding and intermolecular forces affect the properties of substances

How does the 5E model facilitate learning?

  • It emphasizes inquiry, critical thinking, and the process of science.
  • Its success is backed by countless scientific studies that demonstrate its effectiveness.
  • It’s built around the idea that humans construct knowledge and meaning from their learning experiences. They build upon their prior knowledge and, to be effective, learning needs to be active and allow participants to construct new knowledge from their experiences.

What's included?

Engagement Phase – Video Worksheet

  • Your students will watch Crash Course CHEMISTRY #22: Types of Chemical Bonds. This phase introduces students to the idea that atoms can bond in different ways and that bonding affects the properties of substances. Students answer video-based questions and use them to begin discussion about why atoms bond, how ionic and covalent bonds are different, and why substances can have very different melting points, boiling points, and properties.
  • You may also use Crash Course CHEMISTRY #23: Polar and Non-Polar Molecules or Crash Course CHEMISTRY #24: Bonding Models and Lewis Structures as optional support if your students need more background before the main lesson.

Exploration Phase – Device-Based Scavenger Hunt Activity

Your students will complete Types of Chemical Bonds Digital Scavenger Hunt Activity. This activity helps students explore bonding vocabulary, compare different types of chemical bonds, and build background knowledge before the main lessons. Students work individually or in small groups and focus on how ionic, covalent, polar covalent, nonpolar covalent, and metallic bonds are different rather than memorizing definitions in isolation.

Explanation Phase – Lessons

  • Complete Types of Chemical Bonds Lesson and Intermolecular Forces Lesson. These lessons help students understand how atoms bond, how electrons are involved in bonding, and how different types of attractions help explain the properties of substances.
  • The lesson can also be supported with Ionic Compounds Lesson, Molecular Compounds Lesson, or Lewis Structures Senior Chemistry Lesson as needed.

Supplemental activities can also be assigned to help students practice and reinforce understanding:

  • Ionic and Molecular Compounds Cipher Puzzle
  • Ionic Compounds Cipher Puzzle
  • Molecular Compounds Cipher Puzzle

This is the instructional phase where concepts are presented in a clear and applicable way.

  • Students develop an understanding of the content
  • Students develop vocabulary
  • Students are able to connect the content presented to previous experiences
  • Students explain how chemical bonds and intermolecular forces help determine the properties of substances

Elaborate Phase – Digital Interactive Notebook Pages

Your students will complete one or more of the following digital notebook or compound practice activities:

  • Lewis Structures - Digital Interactive Notebook Pages
  • Ionic Compounds - Digital Interactive Notebook Pages
  • Molecular Compounds - Digital Interactive Notebook Pages
  • Polyatomic Compounds - Digital Interactive Notebook Pages
  • Naming Chemical Compounds and Chemical Reactions - Digital Interactive Notebook

Teachers can assign one, two, or all of the digital notebook sections depending on time, student level, and how much practice students need with Lewis structures, chemical formulas, compound names, and bonding models. These activities allow students to extend their understanding of chemical bonding by applying bonding patterns to molecular compounds, ionic compounds, Lewis structures, and compound naming.

Evaluate Phase – Lab Station Activity

In groups of 2–3, have your students complete Types of Bonds & Intermolecular Forces Lab Station Activity. Once they are done, they will submit their passport to you. This phase gives students the chance to demonstrate their understanding of chemical bonds, intermolecular forces, and how different types of attractions affect the structure and properties of substances.

You may also use Molecular and Ionic Compounds Lab Station Activity as an additional or alternate evaluation activity if you want students to focus more heavily on compound formation, formulas, and naming.

This phase helps you evaluate whether students can compare different types of chemical bonds, explain the difference between bonds and intermolecular forces, and apply bonding concepts using evidence rather than only naming vocabulary terms.
