Description

These three space science data graphing activities will help your students understand how planet size, distance, speed, and orbital period are related, how moon phases affect illumination and tides, and how temperature and brightness are connected in stars while building strong graphing and data analysis skills. This bundle gives teachers an easy, NO PREP way to have students work with real-world style space science datasets to explore Solar System Size, Distance & Motion, Moon Phases, Illumination & Tides, and Stars, Temperature & Brightness.

There are 3 Graphing Labs Included:

  1. Lunar Phases, Apparent Illumination & Tidal Range
  2. Planetary Motion, Orbital Periods & Solar System Scale
  3. Stellar Properties, Surface Temperature & Absolute Magnitude

Students analyze real-world style space science datasets related to orbital speed by planet, planet diameter comparison, distance from the Sun and orbital period, moon illumination during a lunar cycle, tidal range during different moon phases, the relationship between moon illumination and tidal range, surface temperature of nearby stars, absolute magnitude, and temperature-brightness patterns in stars. They then create a variety of graph types from data tables before using their graphs to identify patterns, analyze trends, and explain how objects in space behave.

Each activity includes a complete answer key with the required graphs and is very easy to differentiate for different ability levels.

Students use provided real-world data tables to:

  • Create multiple types of graphs (line graphs, bar graphs, and scatter plots)
  • Identify patterns in planetary motion, moon phases, tides, and stars
  • Compare how distance from the Sun affects orbital speed and orbital period
  • Analyze how moon phases affect illumination and tidal range
  • Explore how star temperature relates to brightness
  • Use evidence from graphs to answer discussion questions about space science

Each activity moves students from reading data → graphing data → interpreting patterns → explaining scientific processes.

This graphing bundle is also included inside my High School Science Graphing & Data Analysis Mega Bundle at a significant discount. The bundle contains graphing activities for grades 9-12 science topics in biological and physical sciences as well as specific subjects like chemistry, physics, and biology.
