Description

The Spheres of the Earth - Atmosphere, Geosphere/Lithosphere, Hydrosphere, & Biosphere - Fully editable and Complete 5E Lesson. This bundle is designed for science students studying Earth’s systems, the four spheres of Earth, and how the atmosphere, geosphere/lithosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere interact. The content can be adapted to fit different learning levels.

Lesson Objectives - Throughout this 5E lesson, students will learn about:

  • The four major spheres of Earth
  • The atmosphere and the gases surrounding Earth
  • The geosphere/lithosphere and Earth’s solid land, rocks, minerals, and landforms
  • The hydrosphere and Earth’s water systems
  • The biosphere and all living things on Earth
  • How Earth’s spheres interact with one another
  • How changes in one sphere can affect the other spheres
  • How humans interact with and affect Earth’s systems
  • Examples of sphere interactions in weather, water movement, erosion, ecosystems, and human activity
  • How models and real-world examples can be used to explain Earth system interactions

How does the 5E model facilitate learning?

  • It emphasizes inquiry, critical thinking, and the process of science.
  • Its success is backed by countless scientific studies that demonstrate its effectiveness.
  • It’s built around the idea that humans construct knowledge and meaning from their learning experiences. They build upon their prior knowledge and, to be effective, learning needs to be active and allow participants to construct new knowledge from their experiences.

What's included?

Engagement Phase – Video Worksheet

Your students will watch Earth's Four Spheres - Geosphere, Hydrosphere, Atmosphere and Biosphere and answer questions as they watch. This phase introduces students to the four major spheres of Earth and helps them begin thinking about Earth as a group of connected systems.

Students answer video-based questions and use them to begin discussion about the atmosphere, geosphere/lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and how these systems interact in the real world.

Exploration Phase – Digital Interactive Notebook Pages

Your students will complete Spheres of the Earth Digital Interactive Notebook Pages. This activity helps students explore important vocabulary, identify examples of each sphere, and begin making connections between Earth’s systems.

Students work individually or in small groups and focus on how the atmosphere, geosphere/lithosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere are different but connected. This phase helps students build background knowledge before the full explanation lesson.

Explanation Phase – Lesson

Complete The Spheres of the Earth Lesson.

In this lesson, students learn about the atmosphere, geosphere/lithosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere. They also learn how these spheres interact and how matter, energy, water, air, land, and living things are connected across Earth’s systems.

  • This is the instructional phase where concepts are presented in a clear and applicable way.
  • Students develop an understanding of the content
  • Students develop vocabulary
  • Students are able to connect the content presented to previous experiences
  • Students explain how Earth’s spheres interact with one another

Elaborate Phase – Project Extension

Your students will complete The Spheres of the Earth Project.

This project allows students to extend their understanding of Earth’s systems by applying what they have learned in a creative and meaningful way. Students will demonstrate their understanding of the atmosphere, geosphere/lithosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere while showing how the spheres interact with one another.

This activity works well after students have learned the basic functions of each sphere and are ready to apply their knowledge to real-world examples. Students can use the project to explain sphere interactions, show cause-and-effect relationships, and connect Earth’s systems to natural events or human impacts.

Evaluate Phase – Review, Test, and Lab Station Activity

Students will complete the Spheres of the Earth Review and Test to demonstrate their understanding of the main concepts covered in the lesson.

and/or

In groups of 2–3, students will also complete Spheres of the Earth 7-Station Lab Activity. Once they are done, they will submit their passport to you.

This phase gives students the chance to demonstrate their understanding of the four spheres of Earth, identify examples of each sphere, and explain how the spheres interact. It also helps you evaluate whether students can apply Earth systems concepts using examples and evidence rather than only memorizing vocabulary terms.
