Description

Turn your students into science detectives with this NO PREP, engaging, real-world investigation focused on air pollution and chemical contaminants in the atmosphere. In this case file activity, students analyze air quality data, examine pollutant sources, interpret particle measurements, evaluate chemical composition evidence, rank possible causes, and build a scientific case to solve the mystery of what chemicals are present in polluted air.

Instead of passively reading about air pollution and atmospheric chemistry, students actively investigate, analyze patterns, and reason through the evidence to uncover how gases and particles enter the air and affect air quality. This activity makes environmental chemistry interactive, engaging, and easy to understand while strengthening critical thinking and literacy skills.

✅ NO PREP, no formatting, no issues. Simply download and go. Includes all instructions, answer key, rubric, and background reading students need to solve the case. This mystery is included inside my Chemistry in Everyday Life Mystery Activity Bundle.

10-Part Activity Breakdown

Part 1 – Mission Briefing:
Students are introduced to a case involving poor air quality, visible haze, and concerns about harmful chemicals in the atmosphere.

Part 2 – Background Reading:
Students build foundational knowledge about air pollution, chemical pollutants, particulate matter, and how human activities affect air quality.

Part 3 – Evidence Log:
Students examine 10 detailed evidence cards related to vehicle emissions, factory pollution, particulate matter levels, smog formation, air quality index data, pollutant measurements, and repeated monitoring results.

Part 4 – Suspect Ranking:
Students rank possible causes of air pollution (vehicle emissions, industrial activity, particulate matter, chemical pollutants, environmental conditions) and justify their reasoning using scientific evidence.

Part 5 – Pathway Tracking:
Students trace how pollutants move from sources → release into the atmosphere → chemical changes → impact on air quality.

Part 6 – Impact Analysis:
Students analyze how air pollution affects human health, visibility, ecosystems, and environmental conditions.

Part 7 – The Big Question:
Students explain what chemicals are present in polluted air and how they enter and affect the atmosphere using case evidence.

Part 8 – CER Writing:
Students construct a scientific argument using Claim–Evidence–Reasoning.

Part 9 – Solutions & Action Plan:
Students propose personal, community, and environmental strategies to reduce air pollution.

Part 10 – Reflection:
Students reflect on how human activities influence air quality and environmental health.

What Students Will Learn

  • What air pollution is and how it forms
  • What chemicals are commonly found in polluted air
  • The difference between gases and particulate matter
  • How human activities release pollutants into the atmosphere
  • How vehicle emissions and industrial processes affect air quality
  • What particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) is
  • How smog forms and why it reduces visibility
  • How air quality is measured using the Air Quality Index (AQI)
  • How pollution impacts human health and ecosystems
  • How to use Claim–Evidence–Reasoning (CER) to explain environmental science concepts

This activity blends chemistry, environmental science, Earth science, critical thinking, and literacy skills into one high-interest, structured lesson that keeps students thinking like real-world environmental investigators.
