Description

This growing bundle of bundles is composed of high-engagement, no-prep Science Detective Mystery activities that grow with you. This bundle consists of mystery activities that examine real-world chemistry, human body systems and health, environmental science, and space exploration topics and guide your students through evidence analysis, pathway tracking, suspect ranking, and Claim–Evidence–Reasoning (CER) writing.

Students don’t just learn about science concepts—they investigate real-life applications of them. Designed for 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th grade science, these mysteries are scaffolded in a way that works for many different learning levels.

10-Part Activity Breakdown

Part 1 – Mission Briefing:
Students are introduced to the case involving a real-world science problem related to chemistry, biology, earth and space, or environmental science.

Part 2 – Background Reading:
Students build foundational knowledge about the science concepts related to the case.

Part 3 – Evidence Log:
Students examine 10 detailed evidence cards. The cards include images, charts, text, and diagrams related to the investigation. Two versions are included: one set with images and one without.

Part 4 – Suspect Ranking:
Students rank possible scientific explanations for the problem and justify their reasoning using scientific evidence.

Part 5 – Pathway Tracking:
Students trace how the science process develops, such as changing conditions → system response → observable effects.

Part 6 – Impact Analysis:
Students analyze how the scientific process affects the surrounding system, environment, organism, or observable outcomes.

Part 7 – The Big Question:
Students explain the scientific cause of the mystery using patterns and evidence gathered throughout the investigation.

Part 8 – CER Writing:
Students construct a scientific argument using Claim–Evidence–Reasoning.

Part 9 – Solutions & Action Plan:
Students propose real-world solutions, prevention strategies, engineering responses, or scientific explanations connected to the investigation.

Part 10 – Reflection:
Students reflect on how science concepts explain real-world phenomena and how scientific reasoning helped solve the mystery.

What Your Students Will Learn:

  • How chemistry explains everyday phenomena
  • How body systems work together to support health and respond to problems
  • How environmental processes and human impacts affect Earth’s systems
  • How space science explains patterns, motion, survival, and exploration beyond Earth
  • How matter, energy, living systems, and environments change through cause-and-effect pathways
  • How to analyze scientific evidence including graphs, diagrams, images, and data
  • How to construct scientific explanations using Claim–Evidence–Reasoning (CER)
  • How scientific concepts apply to real-world problems and decisions
  • How scientists investigate, evaluate evidence, and solve complex problems
  • How different areas of science connect through systems thinking and observation

This is a Growing Bundle. The following Mystery Bundles are currently Included:

  1. Chemistry in Everyday Life Detective Mystery Bundle
  2. Human Body Systems and Health Detective Mystery Bundle
  3. Environmental Science Detective Mystery Bundle
  4. Space Exploration Detective Mystery Bundle (10 individual mysteries currently included with 10 more coming soon)

Included in your purchase is The Science Detective Bonus Toolkit: It is a complete investigation companion designed to support both students and teachers in every mystery activity. It includes:

Mystery Resource Buyer Comments:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Extremely satisfied "Students loved the opened (but guided) direction and the thrill of "solving" it"

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Extremely satisfied "These "mysteries" were well written and complete...just print and go with very little set-up. It is student led and could be left for a substitute. I love that there is scaffolding for the CER process as well which allowed me to use in my study skills class. Definitely worth the money!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Extremely satisfied "My students love a good mystery and learning while completing is a win-win! This activity works great for a sub or as a review."

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Extremely Satisfied "I love the quality of these resources so I purchased the bundle! I teach several different courses at different levels and I find they are usefull in all of them (Environmental Science, Life Science, Physics AND even my Study Skills class!)."

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Extremely Satisfied "This is a great way to get students thinking about how chemistry works all around them."

What Students Do

  • Analyze real-world science evidence and data including graphs, images, diagrams, and text.
  • Identify causes, pathways, and impacts of scientific processes, systems, and changes.
  • Track how patterns in matter, energy, living systems, environments, motion, and space lead to observable effects.
  • Rank possible explanations and justify scientific reasoning using evidence.
  • Write clear Claim–Evidence–Reasoning (CER) explanations.
  • Propose realistic solutions and reflect on how science affects daily life and our understanding of the world and universe.

What’s Included in Every Lab
