The Asteroid Defense Mystery - Space Activity | Protecting Earth from Asteroids
$3.97 $2.97
Add to cartTurn your students into science detectives with this NO PREP, engaging, real-world investigation focused on how scientists could protect Earth from an asteroid. In this case file activity, students analyze evidence about asteroid detection, orbit tracking, impact risk, spacecraft deflection, fragmentation risk, mission planning, and why timing matters in planetary defense to solve the mystery of how scientists could prevent a dangerous asteroid from hitting Earth.
Instead of passively learning about asteroids and planetary defense, students actively investigate, analyze patterns, and reason through the evidence to uncover how early detection, careful tracking, and small path changes can protect Earth. This activity makes an exciting space science topic interactive, engaging, and easy to understand while strengthening critical thinking and literacy skills.
✅ NO PREP, no formatting, no issues. Simply download and go. Includes all instructions, answer key, rubric, and background reading students need to solve the case.
10-Part Activity Breakdown
Part 1 – Mission Briefing:
Students are introduced to a planetary defense case and begin investigating how scientists could stop a dangerous asteroid from colliding with Earth.
Part 2 – Background Reading:
Students build foundational knowledge about what asteroids are, how scientists detect and track them, and how an asteroid’s path could be changed before impact.
Part 3 – Evidence Log:
Students examine 10 detailed evidence cards related to near-Earth objects, telescope detection, orbit prediction, why time matters, spacecraft impact, fragmentation risk, asteroid size and damage, mission planning, repeated tracking patterns, and successful deflection strategies.
Part 4 – Suspect Ranking:
Students rank possible explanations such as early detection, orbit tracking, spacecraft deflection, small path changes made early, and the risks of breaking an asteroid apart right before impact, then justify their reasoning using scientific evidence.
Part 5 – Pathway Tracking:
Students trace how an asteroid is detected → observations improve orbit calculations → scientists identify a future impact risk → a spacecraft changes the asteroid’s path → the asteroid misses Earth.
Part 6 – Impact Analysis:
Students analyze why scientists need early detection and tracking, how deflection methods work better than last-minute responses, and why asteroid defense matters for protecting Earth.
Part 7 – The Big Question:
Students explain how scientists could protect Earth from an asteroid using detection, tracking, and path-changing strategies.
Part 8 – CER Writing:
Students construct a scientific argument using Claim–Evidence–Reasoning.
Part 9 – Solutions & Action Plan:
Students propose ways to learn more about asteroids, model asteroid tracking or deflection in the classroom, and think about how engineers can improve future planetary defense systems.
Part 10 – Reflection:
Students reflect on what surprised them and how their understanding of asteroid defense changed during the investigation.
