The Autoimmune Disorder Mystery – Detective SUB PLAN | Immunity, Body Systems
$3.97 $2.97
Add to cartTurn your students into science detectives with this NO PREP, engaging, real-world investigation focused on immune system malfunction and autoimmune disorders. In this case file activity, students analyze laboratory data, examine inflammatory markers, evaluate antibody test results, track immune pathways, rank possible causes, and build a scientific case to solve the mystery of why patients are experiencing joint pain, chronic fatigue, skin rashes, organ inflammation, and recurring symptom flare-ups.
Instead of passively reading about the immune system and autoimmune disease, students actively investigate, analyze patterns, and reason through the evidence to uncover how immune misidentification leads to chronic inflammation and tissue damage. It makes a complex biology topic interactive, engaging, and easy to understand.
✅ NO PREP, no formatting, no issues.
Simply download and go. Includes all instructions, answer key, rubric, and background reading students need to solve the case. This mystery is included inside my Human Body Systems & Health Mystery Activity Bundle.
10-Part Activity Breakdown
Part 1 – Mission Briefing:
Students are introduced to Case File #914 involving patients experiencing joint swelling, fatigue, inflammation, organ dysfunction, and recurring symptom flare-ups without active infection.
Part 2 – Background Reading:
Students build foundational knowledge about the immune system, inflammation, antibodies, immune regulation, and how autoimmune disorders develop.
Part 3 – Evidence Log:
Students examine 10 detailed evidence cards related to elevated CRP and ESR, autoantibodies, absence of infection, joint inflammation, tissue biopsy findings, genetic risk factors, organ dysfunction, fatigue, and improvement with immunosuppressive medication.
Part 4 – Suspect Ranking:
Students rank possible causes of immune malfunction (genetic predisposition, environmental triggers, immune misidentification of self-cells, chronic inflammation, hormonal/regulatory imbalance) and justify their reasoning using scientific evidence.
Part 5 – Pathway Tracking:
Students trace how immune malfunction spreads from trigger → immune misidentification → autoantibody production → inflammation → tissue damage → organ dysfunction.
Part 6 – Impact Analysis:
Students analyze how autoimmune activity affects organs (joints, skin, thyroid, kidneys), cells (antibody targeting and tissue damage), and overall body health (chronic fatigue and systemic inflammation).
Part 7 – The Big Question:
Students explain how immune system malfunction developed into a serious body-wide health problem.
Part 8 – CER Writing:
Students construct a scientific argument using Claim–Evidence–Reasoning.
Part 9 – Solutions & Action Plan:
Students propose personal, community, and medical strategies to regulate immune response and reduce inflammation.
Part 10 – Reflection:
Students reflect on how immune balance impacts long-term health and why early detection is important.
