Description

Turn your students into science detectives with this NO PREP, engaging, real-world investigation focused on magnetism and material properties. In this case file activity, students analyze magnetic test results, examine material composition, compare different metals and nonmetals, evaluate patterns in magnetic behavior, rank possible causes, and build a scientific case to solve the mystery of why only certain materials respond to magnets.

Instead of passively reading about magnetism and materials, students actively investigate, analyze patterns, and reason through the evidence to uncover how material composition determines whether an object is attracted to a magnet. This activity makes physical science concepts interactive, engaging, and easy to understand while strengthening critical thinking and literacy skills.

✅ NO PREP, no formatting, no issues. Simply download and go. Includes all instructions, answer key, rubric, and background reading students need to solve the case. This mystery is included inside my Chemistry in Everyday Life Mystery Activity Bundle.

10-Part Activity Breakdown

Part 1 – Mission Briefing:
Students are introduced to a case involving objects that respond differently to magnets, including metals that attract strongly and others that show no response.

Part 2 – Background Reading:
Students build foundational knowledge about magnetism, magnetic materials, and how atomic structure affects magnetic behavior.

Part 3 – Evidence Log:
Students examine 10 detailed evidence cards related to iron, steel, nickel, aluminum, copper, nonmetals, and repeated magnetic testing results.

Part 4 – Suspect Ranking:
Students rank possible causes of magnetic behavior (material composition, presence of iron, types of metals, nonmetal properties, appearance vs composition) and justify their reasoning using scientific evidence.

Part 5 – Pathway Tracking:
Students trace how material composition → presence of magnetic metals → magnetic interaction → attraction or no response.

Part 6 – Impact Analysis:
Students analyze how material properties affect magnetic behavior and how this influences real-world applications.

Part 7 – The Big Question:
Students explain why only certain materials respond to magnets using evidence from the case.

Part 8 – CER Writing:
Students construct a scientific argument using Claim–Evidence–Reasoning.

Part 9 – Solutions & Action Plan:
Students propose ways to test, sort, and use magnetic materials in practical situations.

Part 10 – Reflection:
Students reflect on how understanding material composition helps explain magnetic behavior.

What Students Will Learn

  • What magnetism is and how magnets interact with materials
  • Which materials are magnetic (iron, nickel, cobalt)
  • Why some metals are magnetic while others are not
  • How atomic structure affects magnetic properties
  • Why nonmetals do not respond to magnets
  • Why appearance does not determine magnetism
  • How steel can be magnetic due to iron content
  • How to identify patterns in scientific investigations
  • How to use Claim–Evidence–Reasoning (CER) to support explanations
  • How magnetism is used in real-world applications like sorting and engineering

This activity blends chemistry, physical science, environmental science, critical thinking, and literacy skills into one high-interest, structured lesson that keeps students thinking like real-world scientific investigators.
