The Respiratory System Failure Mystery – Detective SUB PLAN | Human Body Systems
$3.97 $2.97
Add to cartThe Respiratory System Failure Mystery - Turn your students into science detectives with this engaging, real-world investigation focused on the respiratory system and what happens when breathing and gas exchange break down. In this case file activity, students analyze medical evidence, track respiratory pathways, interrogate suspects, and build a scientific case to solve the mystery of why patients experience shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness, frequent infections, and low blood oxygen levels.
Instead of passively reading about breathing and lungs, students actively investigate, analyze, and reason their way through the case using real scientific evidence. This activity blends life science, human biology, health science, critical thinking, and literacy skills into one high-interest, no-prep lesson that keeps students engaged and thinking like real scientists.
✅ NO PREP, no formatting, no issues. Simply download and go. Includes all instructions, answer key, rubric, and background reading students need to solve the case. This mystery is included inside my Human Body Systems & Health Mystery Activity Bundle.
10-Part Activity Breakdown
Part 1 – Mission Briefing:
Students are introduced to the case and the growing mystery of patients experiencing shortness of breath, chest tightness, fatigue, dizziness, and repeated respiratory infections.
Part 2 – Background Reading:
Students build foundational knowledge about the respiratory system, how breathing and gas exchange normally work, and why scientists are concerned when these processes fail.
Part 3 – Evidence Log:
Students record key information as they examine evidence related to low blood oxygen levels, inflamed airways, damaged alveoli, excess mucus, carbon dioxide buildup, and weak breathing muscles.
Part 4 – Evidence Analysis:
Students summarize evidence, identify patterns, and generate scientific questions about respiratory system failure.
Part 5 – Suspect List:
Students rank possible causes of the failure (inflamed airways, damaged alveoli, excess mucus, weak breathing muscles, environmental exposure) and justify their reasoning.
Part 6 – Pathway Tracking:
Students trace how respiratory system problems reduce airflow, limit gas exchange, and affect oxygen delivery to the body.
Part 7 – Impact Analysis:
Students analyze effects on organs, cells, energy production, and daily activities.
Part 8 – The Big Question:
Students explain how respiratory system failure developed into a serious, body-wide health problem using evidence from the case.
Part 9 – CER Writing:
Students build a scientific argument using Claim–Evidence–Reasoning.
Part 10 – Solutions & Reflection:
Students propose real-world solutions and reflect on how protecting lung health supports overall wellness.
