The Substance Abuse Impact on Body Systems Mystery – Detective SUB PLAN Activity
$3.97 $2.97
Add to cartThe Substance Abuse & Impact on Body Systems Mystery – Turn your students into science detectives with this engaging, real-world investigation focused on substance use and how vaping, smoking, and alcohol affect multiple body systems. In this case file activity, students analyze medical and laboratory evidence, track how substances move through the body, interrogate suspects, and build a scientific case to solve the mystery of why patients experience fatigue, breathing problems, poor coordination, sleep disruption, inflammation, and organ stress over time.
Instead of passively reading about substance use or health risks, students actively investigate, analyze, and reason their way through the case using real scientific evidence. This activity blends life science, human biology, health science, critical thinking, and literacy skills into one high-interest, no-prep lesson that keeps students engaged and thinking like real scientists.
✅ NO PREP, no formatting, no issues. Simply download and go. Includes all instructions, answer key, rubric, and background reading students need to solve the case. This mystery is included inside my Human Body Systems & Health Mystery Activity Bundle.
10-Part Activity Breakdown
Part 1 – Mission Briefing:
Students are introduced to the case and the growing mystery of patients experiencing fatigue, shortness of breath, headaches, poor concentration, sleep disruption, and organ stress.
Part 2 – Background Reading:
Students build foundational knowledge about how substances enter the body and why repeated exposure can disrupt multiple body systems.
Part 3 – Evidence Log:
Students record key information as they examine evidence related to oxygen levels, lung irritation, heart rate changes, liver enzyme levels, nervous system effects, sleep disruption, inflammation, tolerance, and early exposure.
Part 4 – Evidence Analysis:
Students summarize evidence, identify patterns, and generate scientific questions about substance-related system damage.
Part 5 – Suspect List:
Students rank possible causes of the health breakdown (inhaled chemicals, alcohol exposure, reduced oxygen delivery, nervous system disruption, long-term exposure) and justify their reasoning.
Part 6 – Pathway Tracking:
Students trace how substances move from entry points into body systems, affect cells, and lead to widespread health effects.
Part 7 – Impact Analysis:
Students analyze effects on organs, cells, energy levels, immune response, and daily functioning.
Part 8 – The Big Question:
Students explain how substance use developed into a serious, system-wide health problem using evidence from the case.
Part 9 – CER Writing:
Students build a scientific argument using Claim–Evidence–Reasoning.
Part 10 – Solutions & Reflection:
Students propose real-world solutions and reflect on how choices related to substance use affect long-term health.
