Build classroom community from day one with this engaging Ship of Life Identity Project! Students reflect on their strengths, goals, challenges, and support systems through art, writing, and meaningful discussion. Perfect for back-to-school, SEL, and middle school ELA.
Looking for a meaningful back-to-school activity that goes beyond a simple icebreaker? This Ship of Life Identity Project invites students to explore who they are through a creative metaphor while strengthening writing, reflection, and classroom relationships.
Students create a personalized Ship of Life by illustrating and labeling four symbolic parts of their ship:
🌊 Water – their support system
🚢 Boat Hull – strengths and accomplishments
⛵ Sails – fears and challenges
☁️ Clouds – goals, hopes, and dreams
After completing their illustrations, students use the included NEC (Name It, Explain It, Connect It) Writing Organizer to develop thoughtful reflective writing before participating in structured partner discussions that help build classroom community.
This lesson is perfect for the first week of school, advisory, SEL, writing workshop, or any time students need an opportunity to reflect on their identity and connect with classmates.
