Teach a complete Edgar Allan Poe sequence with three coordinated resources that move from author background into close reading of “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “The Raven.” Together, the resources provide approximately 2½–3 weeks of instruction for grades 9–12, depending on class length and how much time you devote to discussion and writing. Each resource can also stand alone inside a larger Gothic literature, short fiction, poetry, or Poe unit.
The sequence begins with a one-class-period Edgar Allan Poe biography and background lesson that gives students useful literary and historical context without allowing biography to overshadow the texts themselves.
Students then move into a fully guided study of “The Fall of the House of Usher.” Because Poe’s language can make comprehension difficult, this unit follows the story chronologically and deliberately separates what happens from what it may mean. Students work through plot checkpoints, vocabulary support, difficult passages in plain English, Gothic ambiguity, symbolism, setting, characterization, and the relationship among the physical house, the Usher family, and Roderick’s state of mind. A separate “Haunted Palace” visual close-reading activity helps students discover Poe’s extended metaphor before connecting it back to the story.
The sequence concludes with “The Raven,” where students again practice separating literal events from interpretation as they examine how grief, repetition, symbolism, sound, and the speaker’s increasingly unstable thinking shape the poem.
Together, the three resources create a coherent Poe study focused on Gothic atmosphere, psychological tension, symbolism, close reading, ambiguity, narrator and speaker perspective, unity of effect, and evidence-based literary analysis.
