Social Media & Freedom of Speech Digital Citizenship for Middle & High School
(2 ratings)$3.00
Add to cartDescription
Teach about digital literacy in a relevant, engaging way!
This lesson engages students in a digital citizenship activity related to social media and freedom of speech.
Students will...
- Complete a KWL chart
- Consider their ideal social media platform
- Watch a video (linked in resource) about social media & the first amendment
- ...and ultimately design a "licensing process" for using social media.
Our "License to Post" activity is perfect for Digital Literacy Week and is great for any class! We recommend it for Government and Civics, as it ties into freedom of speech, but it could be used in any context to review media literacy skills and healthy social media use.
This lesson allows for a lot of creative freedom, both on the part of teachers and students! Our suggested lesson delivery is included on the first page of the PDF, but we encourage you to use the resources in any way you choose.

Teacher reviews
“My students really enjoyed creating a "test" for being able to post on social media. This was a great follow up to some of the SEL learning we had already begun and really made the ideas we talked about concerning digital footprint and responsible posting into something tangible.”
“My students loved this! It was organized well and easy to follow.”

For Calculating Hourly Wages and Overtime Pay Pixel Art
October 15, 2026While I absolutely enjoy this resource, I had some initial difficulty getting my students to actually be able to work on it individually. First, it is online only through google slides; so, I made a copy as instructed. However, the mistake I made was sharing that copy with all of my students. When they accessed it, they were all editing the same copy. I had to make a copy for each of my students and share it with them individually. Second, I had to give each student editor permission (I only missed this step twice). That being said I do love the resource as it self-checks, enabling students to get a 100% and complete the picture. I plan to us it again.
Reply from Surviving in Secondary
Hi Velma, thank you for letting us know you liked this resource. Typically, once you create your own copy, we recommend sharing that through your schools Learning Management system and then there is typically a spot to click that creates individual copies for students. Hopefully that can streamline that process for you for future use!

For Intro to the Executive Branch - Digital Resource Activity for Gov & Civics
March 17, 2026Solid resource that introduces students to the executive branch, however, the secret code was screwed up and ended up not making sense, 2 numbers needed to be changed for it to make sense. Highly suggest modeling the first two answers or so for students because it can be a bit confusing at first.

For Translating Algebraic Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities Scavenger Hunt
October 10, 2024Mostly straightforward... I have not use scavenger-style activities before, so it took me a minute to understand how to connect one answer to the next. My students discovered one typo - a word phrase should have implied minus, or the corresponding answer equation should have read as a "+." We figured it out and moved on. All in all, the students were engaged and had a blast moving around the classroom. Most students were able to complete the activity in 35 minutes. It was very easy to grade the correct answers by their sequence.
Reply from Surviving in Secondary

For Article Analysis One-Pager - Works with ANY ARTICLE in ANY CLASS!
January 8, 2024This is a must have! I am so glad I found it. Having this one pager that I can use over and over again is super helpful for my students. It helps with consistency for my students and makes them focus on ONLY the most important parts of the article. It forces them to figure out what is important and what isn't. I love that you get a blank sheet, a sheet explaining what each field is asking for (great for differentiation), and a sample! HIGHLY recommend this!

For Congruent Triangles Two-Column Proof Error Analysis for Geometry
November 22, 2023On the outset, this looks like a great resource, but save your money. There are many typos and errors in the proofs that aren’t intended to be corrected (the answer key doesn’t acknowledge the mistakes), formatting is weird, and there is an inconsistent use of fonts. I bought this expecting to use it straightaway, but with each class I had to preface that on such-and-such question there was an unexpected error. Waste of money.

For I Spy AI: Creative, Engaging Lesson to Address ChatGPT & Artificial Intelligence
October 15, 2023I recommend this resource aligned with Common Core Standards. This resource offered diverse look at ChatGPT with text excerpts helping students cite evidence effectively (RI.1). Additionally, it fostered engaging and respectful discussions - almost turned into a debate (SL.1) and through the exit ticket and discussion prompts the group activities promoted students' ability to respond to and build off of others' ideas with respect (SL.1d). It's user-friendly, editable, complete, and easy-to-understand instructions for various grades. It's an invaluable aid for experienced and novice teachers alike and even Subs! This I-Spay resource enhanced academic skills, but also cultivated an inclusive classroom environment. Don't miss out on this exceptional piece; it's a game-changer for sure and was super fun to watch the students have a productive struggle thinking through their options! :-)

For Biology Keystone Review Disappearing Act - Whole-Class Review Game
April 24, 2023The idea of this game is very clever and clearly took quite a bit of work to prepare. Kudos to the creator. I was excited to use this activity as part of a Biology EOC exam review day. It is a novel format which helps create interest in the middle of testing season when my students are seemingly tired of almost everything except free time. First period was great, and second went okay too, but it was a flop in third period because students had realized that the icons always lead to the same outcomes. From excitement to disappointment, all before lunch. If you are considering buying this- be aware that you cannot edit the questions (not a perfect match for my standards), you cannot add to the 10 questions (so it is a quick activity), and it has limited re-playability if your students (like mine) talk to their peers in other sections.
