Description

Help students become more aware of how they participate throughout the school day with this Class Participation Tracker and Student Self-Monitoring Checklist. Using simple smiley-face ratings, students track their engagement across six or seven activities or time periods, reflect on their participation, and set a goal for improvement.

Teachers can review the completed trackers to identify patterns, discuss participation goals, and collect student-reported information for IEPs, 504 Plans, MTSS, RTI, or individual behavior support.

Why Use a Class Participation Tracker?

Some students naturally participate in classroom discussions and activities, while others need help recognizing when and how they are involved. Students may struggle with:

  • Participating consistently in discussions and activities
  • Staying engaged throughout a lesson
  • Recognizing their own level of participation
  • Speaking up when they have something to contribute
  • Balancing participation with listening to others
  • Following through with personal participation goals

Self-monitoring gives students an active role in examining their classroom behavior. Instead of relying only on adult feedback, students rate their own participation, reflect on what helped or made participation difficult, and identify an area for improvement.

Which Students May Benefit?

This class participation tracker can support:

  • Students who rarely raise their hands or contribute to discussions
  • Students who need encouragement to participate in classroom activities
  • Students who tend to dominate discussions and need to balance speaking with listening
  • Students with social anxiety who are gradually working toward appropriate participation goals
  • Students who need help recognizing when they are engaged or disengaged
  • Students with participation goals included in an IEP, 504 Plan, MTSS plan, or behavior support plan

Participation does not need to look the same for every student. Teachers can define appropriate expectations based on the student, activity, and classroom setting.

How This Student Self-Monitoring Checklist Helps

  • Builds self-awareness: Students evaluate their own participation instead of depending entirely on adult feedback.
  • Supports classroom engagement: Regular check-ins help students notice how consistently they participate.
  • Encourages goal setting: Students reflect on their day and choose an area to work on.
  • Provides student-reported information: Teachers can compare student ratings with their own observations and discuss differences.
  • Supports greater independence: Students practice monitoring a skill that adults might otherwise need to prompt throughout the day.

How It Works

  1. Enter the activities, classes, or time periods the student will monitor.
  2. Clearly explain what appropriate participation looks like in each setting.
  3. Have the student rate their participation using the smiley-face scale.
  4. At the end of the day, review the ratings and reflection with the student.
  5. Help the student set a realistic participation goal for the next day.

The tracker can be completed independently or reviewed with an adult during a check-in, check-out, counseling session, or individual behavior-support meeting.
