The Temperature Change Mystery - Chemistry Activity | Exothermic, Endothermic
$3.97 $2.97
Add to cartTurn your students into science detectives with this NO PREP, engaging, real-world investigation focused on energy changes in chemical reactions. In this case file activity, students analyze temperature data, examine heating and cooling reactions, evaluate energy transfer patterns, compare repeated trials, rank possible causes, and build a scientific case to solve the mystery of why some reactions feel hot while others feel cold.
Instead of passively learning about exothermic and endothermic reactions, students actively investigate, analyze patterns, and reason through the evidence to uncover how energy is released or absorbed during chemical changes. This activity makes an abstract chemistry concept interactive, engaging, and easy to understand while strengthening critical thinking and literacy skills.
✅ NO PREP, no formatting, no issues. Simply download and go. Includes all instructions, answer key, rubric, and background reading students need to solve the case. This mystery is included inside my Chemistry in Everyday Life Mystery Activity Bundle.
10-Part Activity Breakdown
Part 1 – Mission Briefing:
Students are introduced to a case involving chemical reactions that become warmer or colder without any external heat or cooling source.
Part 2 – Background Reading:
Students build foundational knowledge about exothermic and endothermic reactions and how energy is transferred during chemical changes.
Part 3 – Evidence Log:
Students examine 10 detailed evidence cards related to warming reactions, cold pack reactions, temperature data comparisons, repeated trials, particle rearrangement, and energy diagrams.
Part 4 – Suspect Ranking:
Students rank possible explanations (energy released into the surroundings, energy absorbed from the surroundings, particle rearrangement changing energy, different substances storing different amounts of energy, temperature showing energy transfer) and justify their reasoning using scientific evidence.
Part 5 – Pathway Tracking:
Students trace how substances combine → particles rearrange → energy is released or absorbed → temperature changes.
Part 6 – Impact Analysis:
Students analyze how energy release and absorption affect temperature, surroundings, and reaction behavior.
Part 7 – The Big Question:
Students explain how energy transfer causes reactions to feel hot or cold.
Part 8 – CER Writing:
Students construct a scientific argument using Claim–Evidence–Reasoning.
Part 9 – Solutions & Action Plan:
Students propose real-world applications and safe investigation methods involving temperature changes in reactions.
Part 10 – Reflection:
Students reflect on how energy transfer explains temperature changes in chemical reactions.
What Students Will Learn

For Artemis Missions Reading: From Apollo to Artemis to the Moon | Grade 8 & Up
Artemis had recently completed its mission when I was looking for engaging activities to fill post-assessment instructional time. This resource, combined with several activities I designed myself, helped provide meaningful learning opportunities for students during that period.

For Real World Ecology Decision Challenges Bundle | Ecosystems Activity
I have used some of these resources in the past. A great way to get the students thinking and questioning their own ideas. I cannot wait to incorporate more of these challenges into a variety of my courses.

For Artemis Missions, Moon Bases, and Future Space Colonization Unit Bundle
I like that this has a variety of topics and ways of covering the material. This was a great resource to flesh out my space exploration unit and allow for some "real" work for days when I had a sub planned. The kids were able to keep on track with our unit without losing a day to "busy work". Great material to work with.

For Periodic Table Elements Cipher Puzzle - Physical Science Activity | Atoms
We just so happened to be learning about code talkers in WWII, and my son is currently obsessed with the periodic table. The convergence was great! This project was completely self-directed, easy to understand, and added to his knowledge of the periodic table.
