Dinosaurs Student I Need a Break Card Classroom Emotional Regulation Visual
(2 ratings)$4.00
Add to cartWhen a student becomes overwhelmed but cannot clearly ask for help, frustration, avoidance, shutting down, or challenging behavior may follow. These Dinosaurs Student Break Cards provide clear classroom visuals that can be used as part of an explicitly taught routine for requesting support, taking an appropriate break, and returning to the activity.
This resource now includes four types of break support: student-requested cards, limited-use cards with three tracking boxes, adult-offered break cards, and five-minute walk cards. Multiple Dinosaurs designs allow teachers to choose a visual that is likely to appeal to the individual student.
More Than a Card to Hand Out
Some students recognize that they need a break but have difficulty finding the words to ask for one. Others may leave the area, refuse a task, shut down, or engage in disruptive behavior because they have not yet learned a more effective way to communicate that need.
A break request card gives the student a concrete alternative. The student can hand the card to an adult, place it in a designated location, point to it, or show it when making a verbal request is difficult.
The card does not teach emotional regulation by itself. Students still need to learn how to recognize when they need support, request or accept a break, follow the established routine, and return to the task or activity. The visual helps make that process clearer and more consistent for the student and the adults providing support.
Four Break Card Formats
This resource includes multiple designs across four break card formats:
Student-requested break cards: These cards do not include tracking boxes. They can be used with students who are learning to independently communicate that they need a break or who need access to breaks without a predetermined limit.
Limited-use break cards: These cards include three boxes that can be marked as breaks are used. The boxes provide a visual reminder of how many planned breaks have been used and how many remain.
Adult-offered break cards: The “Please Take a Break” cards allow an adult to offer a visual cue when the adult notices signs of frustration, fatigue, or dysregulation before the student independently recognizes or communicates the need.
Five-minute walk cards: These cards allow an adult to suggest a structured movement break with a clear duration. Teachers should establish the walking route, supervision, and return routine before using this option.
Adult-offered cards should be presented as supportive cues, not as punishment or forced removal from an activity.
Teach Students to Request and Use Breaks Appropriately
Needing a break is not a failure. Adults ask for a moment, step away, or seek support when they need space. Some students need direct instruction and practice to learn those same self-advocacy and emotional-regulation skills.
When a break request is being taught as an alternative to escalation or shutting down, the student first needs to learn that asking works. Initially honoring the agreed break helps build trust in the new communication strategy. Several brief, appropriately requested breaks may result in less lost learning time than a significant behavioral episode followed by a lengthy recovery.
At the same time, teachers can continue building the student’s ability to tolerate frustration and participate in nonpreferred activities. This may include teaching coping strategies, reinforcing time spent with manageable tasks, gradually shortening breaks, or helping the student take a break closer to the activity when appropriate. The purpose is not to provide an unlimited escape from expectations. It is to reduce escalation while teaching communication, regulation, and participation skills together.
When to Consider the Three-Break Card
The limited-use card may be appropriate when the student:
Consistently requests breaks and follows the established routine
Is developing ways to manage frustration and return to tasks
Has a support plan and observation data that support a planned limit
The three boxes do not have to represent three breaks for an entire school day. Depending on the student’s needs and support plan, they may represent three breaks during an hour, class period, half day, or full day. Teach the student when the boxes reset and what support remains available after all three boxes are marked.
If the student is becoming overwhelmed, needed support and breaks should remain available. The adult-offered card can help cue an additional break when the student is not independently recognizing or communicating the need.
How to Introduce the Break Routine
Explain what the break card means and when the student can use it.
Teach the student how to give, show, or point to the card.
Identify where the break will happen and what the student may do.
Establish how the student will know when the break is ending.
Practice requesting and taking a break when the student is calm.
Respond consistently when the student uses the card appropriately.
Teach and support the student in returning to the task or activity.
Monitor requests to identify patterns across tasks, settings, and times of day.
For limited-use cards, print and laminate the card, then mark one box each time a planned break is used. Teach the student when the three boxes reset.
Reinforce Successful Use of the Break Routine
The coordinating progress charts can be used to recognize one individualized skill connected to the student’s break routine, such as:
Asking for a break appropriately
Accepting an adult’s offer of support
Using an agreed coping strategy during the break
Returning to the activity with the planned support
Add a sticker or mark when the student demonstrates the selected skill. The chart should recognize successful use of the routine—not reward the student for going without a needed break.
Why the Dinosaurs Theme Can Help
Choosing a theme connected to the student’s interests can make the visual feel more personal and increase the student’s willingness to use it.
The theme does not replace direct instruction, consistent adult responses, or an individualized break routine. It simply provides a familiar and engaging visual for teaching those skills.
What’s Included

Multiple Dinosaurs designs for adult-offered “Please Take a Break” cards
Multiple Dinosaurs designs for five-minute walk cards
Coordinating 30-space progress charts

Please Note
This resource is a printable PDF and is not editable. The wording, graphics, layout, and number of break-tracking boxes cannot be changed.
Break supports should be selected according to the individual student’s communication, regulation, and instructional needs. Before placing a limit on student-requested breaks, consider why the student is requesting them and whether the breaks are meeting a regulation, communication, sensory, health, or task-related need.
These cards are designed to support an individualized intervention. They do not replace a functional behavior assessment, behavior intervention plan, evaluation, or consultation with qualified members of the student’s educational team.

I wish I had read the reviews more thoroughly before purchasing. This editable PDF is very limited from a technology standpoint. Not being able to import or use it within the Google Suite made it essentially unusable for my needs. If you're looking for a document to print, fill out, or save locally on a desktop, this would work perfectly. However, if you need something you can easily edit, share, collaborate on, or update in a “live” format, this isn’t it.
Reply from The Responsive Educator
Hi Caitlin,I’m sorry this was not the format you were looking for. As indicated in the listing, this resource is a fillable PDF rather than a Google-based or live collaborative tracker. It is designed for a case manager or teacher to transfer accommodations from each student’s IEP, save the completed form, and then print or email it to the staff members who need the information. This provides the team with a consistent reference while helping ensure that the documented accommodations continue to match the IEP.I have added further clarification to the description about the PDF format and intended workflow to help future buyers determine whether it meets their needs.

Kara,Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I’m sorry to hear the resource felt difficult to use—that’s definitely not the experience I want for teachers. This tool is designed to help organize and graph ABC behavior data in a way that supports real FBA and IEP decision-making, but I know it can feel unfamiliar at first if you haven’t used a system like this before. I include step-by-step directions in the file, and I’m always happy to help users get started or troubleshoot anything that feels confusing. If you’d like support, please feel free to reach out to me directly at jennifer@theresponsiveeducator.com. I’d be glad to walk you through the setup or help you adapt it to your specific situation. My goal is for this resource to make your job easier, not harder.

For Rate Behavior Tracking Sheet One Student Behavior Tracker & Graphing
Formulas do not work in spreadsheets to calculate rates which means I am just able to basically enter data into a sheet without any pictures/rates/averages provided. :( unsure if you are aware of this issue with this form.
Reply from The Responsive Educator
Thank you for sharing this—we never want a tool to feel like “just a sheet.” I re-downloaded and tested the file again today, and the rate formulas are calculating as intended once both columns are filled in (frequency and minutes). Two quick things that can make it look like the formulas aren’t working: If the minutes cell is blank, Excel/Sheets will show #DIV/0 until a number is entered. The charts have default axis caps (Frequency up to 25, Minutes up to 120, Rate up to 60). If your data goes above those, the math still works, but the points can sit off-scale and the graph looks empty. If that’s what you’re seeing, I can help. Please email me at jennifer@theresponsiveeducator.com and I’ll walk you through it or send you a version with higher chart ranges to match your data. I’m happy to make sure this works smoothly for you.

For ABC Data Tracking Sheet Editable Behavior Checklist & Data Graphs Behavior Chart
I thought the graph would mirror the ABC behavior print out but it doesn't. I needed to be able to print the single use sheet and enter multiple incidents. I was hoping the graph would compile all the data from all the single incidents I record. It doesn't do that. It only does a graph for each individual incident. Also doesn't have a spot to actually enter the behavior into the spreadsheet. It leaves that component out. Due to this the only part of this purchase that will be useful is the actual single use printout.
Reply from The Responsive Educator
Thank you for your feedback. I’m sorry to hear the product didn’t work the way you expected. I want to clarify how the system is designed, in case it helps you or others who may be considering it.The single-incident ABC forms (included in both printable and digital formats) are intended for documenting each individual behavior occurrence. To create graphs, the system uses a summary process: you enter the frequency counts of each problem behavior into the Excel sheet. From there, the spreadsheet automatically generates graphs and allows you to identify the 1–3 most significant behaviors (by frequency or severity). Those target behaviors then have dedicated graphing pages for a deeper look at antecedents, activities, and consequences. The goal is not to graph every single incident one by one, but to streamline the FBA process by highlighting the top behaviors of concern and providing in-depth analysis for those. There is a place in the spreadsheet to enter the behavior and its frequency, which will immediately populate the overall graphs.I appreciate you sharing your perspective — it helps me see where I can make the listing even clearer so expectations are aligned.

I hope this message finds you well. I’m writing to report a technical issue I have encountered with the PDF form currently in use. It appears that the checkboxes in the document are unintentionally linked. Specifically, when the first checkbox is selected in one section, the corresponding checkbox in another section is automatically checked as well. Could you please look into this and let us know if a corrected version of the form can be provided? If needed, I’d be happy to share a sample or walk through the issue in more detail. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

This does not transfer over to google docs. It is also not as easily editable as described. For example, when typing a name under the student section it types vertically not horizontally. In addition, you cannot add additional columns if needed. Unfortunately, this was not what I was expecting.
Reply from The Responsive Educator
Hi Alexandra—thanks for the feedback, and I’m sorry for the frustration. A formatting issue was reported in July. I fixed it on July 19 and sent an update notice to all purchasers through TPT. If your download was from before that date, please go to My Purchases and re-download to get the corrected file.A couple of clarifications:- This resource is a fillable PDF (print + digital). It has 16 preset columns and doesn’t transfer to Google Docs for editing. - If typed text ever appears vertical or light/gray, please save the file and open it in Adobe Acrobat Reader (free). Browser previews and Google tools can distort form fields. If you still see any issue after updating, please feel free to reach out.

These skills are a little higher than I was originally looking for but in conjunction with the K-2 level of this class, this resource is an excellent guide to review my students' functional skills. I would have loved to see this resource be more editable so that I could add the level of support that my students require to complete these tasks at this time. Overall, great resource! Love all the skills that are listed!
Reply from The Responsive Educator
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review, Hannah! I’m glad to hear you found the skills helpful and that it works well alongside the K-2 level. I’d love to better understand your suggestion about adding the level of support—are you envisioning that directly on the checklist itself (so you could mark both the skill and support level at the same time), or are you hoping for something different? I do have a data collection sheet included in the resource that allows tracking of support levels, but I’d be happy to hear more about what would make it most useful for you in the future. If you’d like to share more details, feel free to reach out to me at jennifer@theresponsiveeducator.com. I always appreciate feedback to make updates more practical for teachers. Thanks again!
